Shielding children and young people from the consequences of this behavior – male or female – is almost guaranteed to spoil them. In some countries, it is actually sons who are spoiled. I know, it seems hard to believe, but in much of Asia men are not expected to cook, budget or clean, and the onus of sexual restraint is entirely on the female. In the US, this is inverted, hence the tendency for young women to be in debt despite lack of personal hardship or adverse circumstances. Unless your habits are terrible, if your parents supported you through college you should be firmly in the black by your mid twenties, yet this is rarely the case for young American women. Furthermore, if you never lose in divorce and have more access to public funds, you should likewise be able to save plenty even without a stable marriage, but again this is not the norm.
In Japan, on the other hand, women are placed in charge of family funds from a young age. In China, they are responsible for preventing or making up for mistakes made by their husbands and brothers, and sometimes their fathers. I know a Chinese woman who grew up poor and now owns a multi-million dollar company; before she found success she had to bribe officials to get her brother out of jail repeatedly and pay for her father’s heart disease treatment. Can anyone imagine a twenty-something American woman doing that? It’s almost unthinkable. Chinese women are remarkably savvy when it comes to personal and household finances. Without affirmative action and hand-holding, I’d expect that a majority of the woman-owned businesses in the US would be run by Asian women, despite the fact that they comprise only a few percent of the population.
The sad thing about it is that budgeting shouldn’t require any extraordinary abilities. All it takes is a little work and some common sense. Given her problems, I support Clark-Flory’s decision to delegate financial management to her husband, but the fact that she has to do this in the first place is tragic. If we finally started treating our women like responsible human beings with some agency in the real world, maybe it wouldn’t be necessary for men to pick up the slack in yet another part of the domestic domain.
When you look at the big picture, it’s truly amazing how much feminism has done to infantilize women.
A fine article, thank you.
The cultural comparison is especially interesting: it explains succinctly where the impression that Asian women are ‘better’ comes from.
